What is a black triangle on my teeth and how can it be hidden?

1

A black triangle in dentistry is a small, triangular-shaped area of the tooth that is missing. These black triangles are most commonly found between the two front teeth (the incisors) but can also occur between other teeth. Dr. Lenny Slepchik will diagnose and discuss your  treatment options.

What causes black triangles?

Black triangles can be caused by a variety of factors, including the following:

  • Periodontal disease
  • Brushing too hard
  • Tooth clenching and grinding
  • Dental trauma

While black dental triangles are mainly a concern for your appearance, they could sometimes be a sign of underlying dental problems. If you see this image when you smile, it is important to see a dentist so that any underlying issues can be diagnosed and treated.

How can black triangles be treated?

If you are concerned about black triangles, consider reserving an appointment with Dr. Lenny Slepchik, located in downtown Montreal.  He will determine the cause and recommend the best treatment plan. Treatment for black triangles will vary depending on the underlying cause and based on the patient’s unique dental situation and budget.

For example, if gum disease is the underlying cause, treatment will focus on addressing the gum disease. This may involve a deep cleaning, scaling, and root planing (a procedure that involves removing tartar and plaque from below the gum line) with your hygienist. Sometimes, you may also need an antibiotic prescription  or be recommended to use a specific mouthwash.

If tooth grinding caused the black triangle to develop, a night guard may be the solution to protect your teeth from further damage.

In some cases, dental black triangles can be corrected with cosmetic dental procedures, such as veneers or bonding. Veneers are thin, custom-made shells bonded to the front of your teeth. Bonding involves using a tooth-coloured resin to fill in spaces between your teeth.
