- Quit tobacco use, including smoking cigarettes, cigars, and chewing tobacco IMMEDIATELY ! If you need help to do it, please get it !
- Reduce or eliminate alcohol consumption, as approximately 7 out of 10 patients diagnosed with oral cancer are heavy drinkers.
- Avoid contracting HPV (human papilloma virus) as it has been found to be linked to those who develop oral cancer in the future
- Have regular screenings performed with a professional to ensure early detection.
- Visit the dentist regularly for evaluations and cleanings to monitor oral health and wellness overall
What are the symptoms of oral cancer?
There are many signs that may present as an indication that oral cancer is present. If any of the above situations are noticed, it may be time to book an evaluation with your dentist:
- Red or white patches on the gums, on the lining of the inner mouth, or the tongue
- Pain, numbness, or unexpected bleeding in the mouth
- Lumps in the mouth, on the lip, or in the throat
- A persistent sore throat that is not caused by allergies, a cold, or strep throat
- Pain or discomfort when chewing and swallowing food
- Jaw swelling
