Why Snoring Should be Treated by Dentists

Snoring and sleep apnea are problems which affect a large part of our population age 30 years old and up.
Fact: between the ages of 33 and 69, 69% of men snore, while 46% of women snore. This leads to many problems, including the most serious, which is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Continuous snoring often causes couples to sleep apart. Sleep apnea often leaves an individual with headaches, fatigue, and difficulty in staying awake, Individuals who suffer with severe sleep apnea (7% of the population) have 23 times the risk of a heart attack compared to a healthy person.
Sleep apnea can also lead to the following;
High Blood Pressure
Diabetes
Stroke
Cardiovascular disease
Sleep Apnea is a very serious issue and should not be left untreated.

So why should sleep apnea be treated by your dentist?
An effective mode of treatment for both snoring and OSA is the Digital Sleep Apnea and anti-snoring device. (D-SAD). This is made taking impressions of the upper and lower teeth; then your bite is taken with your teeth in an advanced position. The D-SAD, when in place, holds the lower jaw forward which increases the throat space and eases air flow. This eliminates the primary cause of snoring and prevents the obstruction responsible for the sleep apnea.

As dental restorations are done, your dentist must adjust the device to maintain it’s effectiveness. .I hope you have found this short explanation helpful. If you have any questions, please contact me. I will be happy to answer them.
