What to do if you have a Toothache

If you have shooting pain or dull pain in your mouth, our number one piece of advice is to come into our office for an appointment. However, if you are unable to see us for a few days, we have a few suggestions to help you find relief from your toothache or at least take some of the edge off. Let’s take a closer look at a few tried and true tips.

Ibuprofen

As long as you are NOT currently taking blood thinners or medications that conflict with Ibuprofen, it’s one of the best things you can take for a toothache. Ibuprofen is not only non-habit forming, but it can help with both pain and swelling, which go together. Just make sure that you speak to your primary care physician before you start taking it .  You need to verify that it is safe for you to take it, especially if you currently take other medications or have other medical issues.

Ice It

If you are experiencing some swelling along with pain, then icing it will also help. When icing your cheek, try to keep something like a cloth as a barrier between the ice pack and your skin, so that it doesn’t give you freezer burn. Try icing for 5 minutes on and 5 minutes off at first and see if that gives you any relief.

Rinse With saltwater

If your toothache is caused by some sort of infection, then rinsing your mouth with a saltwater solution can help you fight it off. All you have to do is mix ½ tsp of salt with 1 cup of lukewarm water. Then, gently swish the saltwater in your mouth for about a minute, spit it out, and then repeat.

Although these tips won’t necessarily get rid of your toothache, they can help you find some relief until you can come into our office. To learn more, contact our downtown Montreal office and give us a call at 514-875-7971 or email us at reception@smilesbydrslepchik.com.
