How to Avoid Gum Disease

When you come to our office for your teeth cleaning and examination appointment, one of the many things your hygienist does is check the health of your gums.  This is done by using a specific instrument which measures the health of your gum tissue.  If  she notices bleeding while cleaning your teeth, this also tells us you have gum disease.  If left untreated, it will not go away on its own. It MUST be addressed. Your gums are the foundation of your mouth.

Brush Well

Brushing your teeth isn’t just the number one way for you to avoid cavities, but it’s also a great way for you to avoid gum disease as well. As long as you brush gently along the gum line and the base of your teeth, you should be able to get rid of plaque and bacteria.

Get Regular Cleanings

To avoid gum disease, we advise you to come to our office regularly for your  dental cleaning and examination appointment according to your specific regimen.  During your dental cleaning, your hygienist will also clean your teeth along the gum line to get rid of any plaque or tartar buildup. Also, if there are premature signs of gum disease, a deeper cleaning may be necessary to prevent it from getting worse.

Quit Tobacco

If you smoke, you aren’t just putting your body at risk; you’re also putting your mouth at risk of gum disease. If you are looking for another reason to quit smoking, here it is.
