How Long Does the Effect of Nitrous Oxide Last?

Nitrous oxide  is a colourless and odorless substance often used for pain management and mild sedation. Dentists frequently administer nitrous oxide to promote relaxation and reduce anxiety during your dental appointment.

How long does the effect of nitrous oxide last? Let’s explore the short-term and long-term effects.

How Does Nitrous Oxide Work?

Dr. Slepchik and an assistant working on a patientWhen inhaled, nitrous oxide slows the body’s reaction time, resulting in a calm and euphoric feeling. It dampens painful sensations and provides immediate relief and comfort during dental procedures.

The good news is that nitrous oxide does not cause long-term side effects. Some people feel mild dizziness or nausea, but these effects typically reverse themselves quickly.

If you notice any unusual symptoms after receiving nitrous oxide or if a side effect persists for hours or days, consult your dentist.

It’s also critical to talk to your doctor about your medical history to decide if nitrous oxide is the right kind of sedation dentistry for you. Keep in mind that not everyone should do it, particularly if:

  • You’re in your first trimester of pregnancy.
  • You have a medical history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or respiratory illness.
  • You have methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) deficiency.

Duration of Nitrous Oxide Effects

The effects of nitrous oxide continue until the ga is stopped. We always keep our patient on oxygen until you are ready to walk out of our office. The sedative takes about five to ten minutes to leave your system completely.

Your mental state returns to normal as soon as the supply off. You can even drive after receiving nitrous oxide treatment for dental services because of its short-acting nature, making it easy for you to get back to your regular routine after your appointment.
