How do you know if you have a cavity?

If you have never had a cavity before, then you may not know the first thing about how you can spot it. Cavities are holes in your tooth that are caused by too much plaque and bacteria that have built up on it. Even though cavities are very common and easy to treat, some people go for extended periods of time without having their cavities filled which can result in larger problems further along. To help you make sure that you can spot a cavity right away, Dr. Slepchik has created a list of some signs.

Pain When You Bite Down

Chewing your food should be far from painful. If you have started to experience pain every time you bite down on some food, then that’s a huge sign that you have some tooth sensitivity that’s likely caused by a cavity. If you experience tooth sensitivity when you bite down, that may or may not be caused by a cavity; instead, it may just be caused by weakened dental enamel. During a thorough examination, Dr. Slepchik will be able to tell you what exactly is causing your mouth pain.

Toothache

Another large indicator of a cavity is a toothache that comes on spontaneously. If you notice that all of a sudden your tooth is starting to throb and ache then it’s likely caused by some sort of tooth infection like a cavity.

Visible Holes

If you brush your teeth in front of the mirror, then you are probably really familiar with the shade of your natural teeth. If you notice that you have a brown or black spot on your tooth, this may be a cavity. Cavities are holes in the tooth and can sometimes be easy to spot on your own.
