Full and partial dentures for tooth replacement

Replacing missing teeth is necessary for the function, health, and appearance of the smile. Unfortunately, some patients feel overwhelmed at the choices available to them. In the downtown Montreal practice of Dr. Lenny Slepchik he encourages his patients to ask questions about the benefits of removal appliances for tooth replacement such as partial and complete dentures.

  • Partial dentures – Dr. Lenny Slepchik describes the partial denture as a removable appliance that includes a metal framework with false teeth. The partial denture is made to slide into place and use the remaining teeth in the dental arch to hold it in place. Partial dentures may be used to replace one or several teeth in the dental arch, depending on the patient’s specific needs and situation. Patients with dental insurance will often find that their plan covers part or all of the cost of partial dentures, making them an affordable solution.
  • Full dentures – another option for patients missing teeth is the full denture. Full dentures are designed to replace all the teeth in the dental arch. They are made of acrylic and include both false teeth and false gum tissues. They rest on the ridge of the gums with natural suction or the use of denture adhesives. Alternatively, some patients may choose to have implant-retained full dentures. In this situation, the dentist will place four to six dental implants along the dental arch. Then, specialized dentures are fabricated to snap into place with these implants. The result is a more conservative denture that has better strengthen and stability since the dental implants have the bone of the jaw as its foundation. Patients who choose implant-retained dentures find they have more confidence in their dentures than those who use traditional full dentures. To obtain implant-retained dentures, patients should have enough bone in the jaw for the surgical procedure to be successful.
