Do you have fillings that were done a long time ago where there was decay? Are you aware that fillings do not last forever? Many patients are unaware that fillings are not a permanent solution. Eventually, fillings may need to be replaced.
While fillings are strong and durable and may last a long time, they are not a permanent solution. When fillings are in place, they can be impacted by the forces needed for chewing and biting. This can damage the fillings over time and cause them to deteriorate. This is especially true for patients who have poor bite alignment or for patients who clench and grind their teeth, as this can cause unusual “wear and tear” on both teeth and the dental restorations. If decay develops underneath a dental filling, it may cause the filling to become loose.
In Dr. Slepchik`s office, he uses only tooth-coloured composite resin material; these filings are long lasting and blend in to your natural tooth colour. This also gives a nice aesthetic result when you smile. We no longer use mercury(or amalgam) fillings ever as mercury is considered a toxin for the body. If you have amalgam in your mouth, we do suggest changing over to composite resin material. It is better for your health and will add to your beautiful smile.
How do You Know a filling needs to be replaced?
Most situations in which a filling needs to be replaced are detected by Dr. Lenny Slepchik during your examination. However, sometimes our patient may notice a crack or feel some sensitivity from the tooth. Any signs of pain or cracking of the filling should be evaluated further to determine if the filling needs to be replaced. If a filling falls out of a tooth, patients should seek treatment as soon as possible to keep the tooth from becoming infected.
