When you reserve a dental cleaning with your dentist, you need to know that there are many different types of cleanings. Dr. Lenny Slepchik , in his downtown Montreal office, may recommend a different type of cleaning, depending on the patient’s specific situation. Below is some information on the differences between a routine dental cleaning and a deep dental cleaning.
- Routine dental cleaning – patients who visit the dentist regularly, ideally every 3 months, will often need a routine dental cleaning known as prophylaxis. Routine dental cleanings are performed in the dental office with the dental hygienist. The surfaces of the teeth and gums are cleaned and the teeth are polished. After your cleaning, a sealant or fluoride treatment may be necessary based on our patient’s unique needs.
- Deep cleaning – a deep cleaning is needed if a patient has certain conditions such as periodontal disease. A deep cleaning may be necessary if the patient has not had a cleaning for a very long time or the hygienist finds in her examination along with Dr. Slepchik that you have periodontal disease called “periodontitis” . Deep cleanings are sometimes called “scaling and root planing” and are more extensive than a regular prophylaxis appointment. During these treatments, bacteria, calculus, and debris that have collected under the gum line is removed. If there is inflammation and signs of infection, antibiotics may be prescribed. Some patients may choose to have the cleaning done in quadrants over the course of several visits. This treatment is often needed in patients who have periodontal disease that is putting their smile at risk of severe damage.
