Bad dental habits you should think about eliminating during National Dental Hygiene Month

Caroline (Hygienist)Taking good care of your oral health is essential to avoiding problems such as periodontal disease and tooth decay. During National Dental Hygiene Month, Dr. Lenny Slepchik and his team in downtown Montreal educate patients on four common bad dental habits:

  • Skipping dental appointments – It is so important that you see your dentist and hygienist  regularly according to your specific needs for a professional cleaning and evaluation. During your appointment, Dr. Slepchik will notice the early signs of tooth decay or gum disease. Do not wait until you have a problem to see the dentist – make sure you keep up with your appointment schedule and focus on preventing emergencies.
  • Eating sugary snacks – Sugar is one of the worst things for your teeth. When you eat foods high in sugar, it sticks to your teeth and creates a breeding ground for bacteria. This often leads to the development of cavities and tooth decay. If you’re going to eat sugary snacks, be sure to brush your teeth afterward to remove the sugar from the surfaces of the teeth and gums.
  • Chewing on hard objects – chewing on hard objects can damage your teeth. Avoid chewing on ice, hard candy, or anything else that is hard. If you need to chew on something, consider sugar-free gum instead to keep saliva flow up and improve oral health. Avoid gums that are not sugar-free as these can contribute to decay.
  • Grinding your teeth – grinding your teeth can damage your enamel or cause breakage.  If you grind your teeth at night, Dr. Lenny Slepchik can provide a proper diagnosis of bruxism and will recommend a nightguard to wear while sleeping.

If you break these bad habits and start practicing good dental hygiene, you’ll be on your way to a healthier smile!
