Whether you have had prior orthodontic work done or if you have never had anyone but a dentist touch your teeth, you may notice that as you age, your teeth start to shift a little bit. But why do they shift and what can you do to stop it? Let’s take a closer look.
Mesial Drift
If you haven’t even had orthodontic work done but have noticed that your teeth are moving more towards the front of your mouth as you get older, then it may be caused by mesial drift. Even though a lot of people experience mesial drift after they lose a tooth, some people notice it the more they age— with or without tooth loss.
Shifting After Orthodontic Care
If you had braces when you were a lot younger but have long since retired your retainer than you can expect to see some shifting from your teeth. Your retainer is designed to help keep your teeth in the perfect place so that no shifting occurs, but when you stop wearing your retainer, your teeth may either shift slightly or they may shift all the way back to their initial pre-braces position.
How Can We Treat It?
Here at Dr. Lenny Slepchik’s office, we can treat shifting teeth in a variety of ways including either with a new retainer or even Invisalign. Depending on how much shifting has occurred, we will determine which option will be best for you and your mouth. If Invisalign is recommended, we will have you come into our office for a series of appointments.
